Why sewage is treated differently
Water carrying sewage is generally treated as grossly contaminated. That changes the approach: the area is contained rather than simply dried, porous materials that absorbed contaminated water — carpet, pad, drywall bottoms, particleboard, insulation — are typically removed rather than cleaned, surfaces are cleaned and treated, and only then is the structure dried and verified.
It also changes who should be in the space. Occupants, especially children, elderly residents and anyone immunocompromised, should stay out of affected areas until the cleanup is complete.
Before help arrives
- Stop using water fixtures on the affected line if a backup is active.
- Keep people and pets out of the affected area.
- Do not run fans across contaminated water — it can spread aerosols.
- Photograph the area from a safe distance for documentation.
